Privacy Policy for HeatSeek

Last updated: July 22, 2026

HeatSeek is a menu-bar app for macOS that displays real-time thermal pressure on your Mac and identifies which running processes are generating heat. Your privacy is simple to explain because HeatSeek is built to keep everything on your device.

The short version

HeatSeek does not collect, transmit, store, or share any personal data. It has no accounts, no analytics, no tracking, and no servers.

What HeatSeek accesses

To do its job, HeatSeek reads the following information locally on your Mac:

  • System thermal state — Apple's reported thermal pressure level.
  • CPU and GPU utilization — system-wide load percentages.
  • Running process information — process names, IDs, and per-process CPU usage, used to show which apps are generating heat.

All of this is read directly from macOS system APIs, used only to render the menu bar item and its popover, and is never sent anywhere.

Where your data goes

Nowhere. HeatSeek performs all monitoring and calculation on your device.

  • No network connections. HeatSeek does not contact any server for its core monitoring functionality.
  • No third-party services. There are no analytics SDKs, advertising frameworks, or tracking libraries.
  • No cloud storage. Nothing is uploaded or synced.

Data stored on your device

Any data HeatSeek keeps stays on your Mac and never leaves it:

  • Thermal history is held in memory to draw graphs and is not written to any external location.
  • Preferences (such as your notification threshold and launch-at-login choice) are stored locally in the standard macOS UserDefaults for the app.
  • CSV exports are created only when you explicitly choose to export, and are saved to the location you pick. HeatSeek never transmits them.

You can clear the in-app thermal history at any time from the Details window.

Notifications

If you enable threshold notifications, HeatSeek uses the standard macOS notification system to alert you locally when thermal pressure is high. These notifications are generated on your device and are not sent through any external service.

Permissions

HeatSeek runs without the macOS App Sandbox so it can read system-wide process and hardware telemetry. This access is used solely for on-device thermal monitoring. HeatSeek does not read your files, keystrokes, screen contents, location, contacts, or any other personal information.

Children's privacy

HeatSeek does not collect any data from anyone, including children, and is not directed at children specifically.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be published with a revised "Last updated" date. Because HeatSeek collects no data, any changes will relate to clarifications rather than new data practices.
